Box Score UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team suffered a 83-65 setback to 22nd-ranked John Carroll University on Wednesday at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
Capital (6-6, 2-3 OAC) grabbed an early 7-4 lead before surrendering a 7-0 run that was sparked by an Emily Taylor three-point shot, allowing John Carroll (11-1, 4-1 OAC) to lead with 15:33 left in the first half. The Crusaders responded with a run of its own, scoring nine straight points. The run included a pair of jump shots from Simonne Gage (Dayton, Ohio) and Jaren Francis (Columbus, Ohio) and a layup from Shelby Sigman (Bellbrook, Ohio), before Nina Napolitano (Akron, Ohio) capped it off with a three ball. The run tied the game at 24-24 with 6:59 left in the half. John Carroll grabbed a lead it would keep for the remainder of the game thanks to a 12-0 run that opened up a 36-24 advantage.
The Crusaders exceled at the charity stripe, converting on 12-of-13 free throw attempts in the first half, compared to the Blue Streaks going 5-for-9.
Jenna Erwin (Springfield, Ohio) hit a three-point jumper that cut John Carroll's lead to nine with 3:10 remaining in the game before the Blue Streaks answered with a 9-0 run the put the Crusaders away for good. Kristen Thompson (Cincinnati, Ohio), Shelby Sheets (Fayetteville, Ohio) and Napolitano led the Crusaders in scoring with 13 points apiece.
John Carroll senior Beth Switzler recorded a double-double with 12 rebounds and 10 points.
The Crusaders are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 10, when they play host to Baldwin Wallace at 3 p.m. at the Capital Center.
