Softball Splits Pair in Non-Conference Finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Capital University softball team posted a 1-1 record Wednesday at Bluffton in a non-conference doubleheader in Bluffton, Ohio.

Playing their final non-conference games of the season, the Crusaders (21-17 overall) fell 6-1 in the opener before taking the second game 5-0.

In the nightcap, Capital scored in each of the second through fifth innings and out-hit the Beavers (24-14) by a 10-4 margin.

Junior pitcher Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio) tossed her fourth shutout of the season, allowing just four hits while striking out six over her seven innings of work. Patznick, who stranded nine Bluffton runners, improved to 12-6 on the year with the win.

Sophomore third baseman Katlyn Simpson (Loudonville, Ohio) started the scoring in the top of the second with a run-scoring groundout. In the third, junior left fielder LeAnna Cotton (Okeechobee, Fla.) doubled the Crusaders' lead with a squeeze bunt.

Sophomore right fielder Ashley Knowles (Canton, Ohio), who tripled to lead off the fourth, scored on another RBI groundout by Simpson. Knowles then knocked in a run in the fifth on a base hit up the middle. Two batters later, junior centerfielder Kelsey Swain (Pickerington, Ohio) knocked in a run with a single up the middle.

Knowles led Capital with three hits in the contest. Junior first baseman Maura Rose (Williamsport, Pa.) and sophomore shortstop Therese Becker (South Euclid, Ohio) added two hits apiece.

In Game 1, the Beavers plated four runs in the bottom of the first and didn't look back, tallying six unanswered by the end of the affair.

Capital scored its lone run in the top of the first as freshman designated player Marisa Koss (Ostrander, Ohio) came scored from third on a Bluffton error.

Sophomore second baseman Brooklyn Staten (Grove City, Ohio) led the Crusaders with a pair of hits. Rose, Cotton and Becker contributed with one hit apiece.

Junior pitcher Brooke Billings (Clyde, Ohio) dropped to 8-10 with the loss, striking out three in a complete-game effort.

Capital closes its 2014 campaign this Saturday at Ohio Northern. First pitch of the Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m. in Ada.
