Crusaders Salvage Split With Run-Rule Victory

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Capital University softball team broke out the bats in the second game of a doubleheader Thursday, defeating Transylvania 9-1 in five innings in non-conference play at Lexington, Ky.

The Crusaders (9-5 overall) dropped the first game 10-5.

Capital tallied in every inning but the second in Game 2, recording 10 hits as junior pitcher Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio) tossed a complete-game, one-hitter to improve to 5-2 for the year.

Sophomore third baseman Katlyn Simpson (Loudonville, Ohio), junior left fielder LeAnna Cotton (Okeechobee, Fla.), sophomore shortstop Therese Becker (South Euclid, Ohio) and freshman designated player Marisa Koss (Ostrander, Ohio) registered two hits apiece to lead the Crusaders' offense.

Simpson knocked in the first run of the contest with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first. After the Pioneers (6-10) responded with a run in the bottom of the second, Simpson hit a single through the right side in the top of the third to put Capital ahead for good.

Cotton hit her team-leading fifth home run of the season later in the frame, a two-run shot to plate Simpson and make it 4-1 Crusaders.

After scoring a run in the fourth, Capital crossed the plate four more times in the top of the fifth on doubles by Simpson and Becker and Koss's two-run single to center. All runs in the inning scored with nobody out.

Patznick retired Transylvania 1-2-3 in the fifth to seal the victory by run rule.

In the opener, Capital took an early 2-0 lead with runs in the first and second, but Transylvania plated seven unanswered runs in the third and fourth to take control of the contest.

Cotton, Simpson, junior centerfielder Kelsey Swain (Pickerington, Ohio), sophomore right fielder Ashley Knowles (Canton, Ohio) and sophomore second baseman Brooklyn Staten (Grove City, Ohio) posted two hits apiece to lead the Crusaders.

Cotton knocked in two runs and swatted a solo homer in the top of the seventh. Swain scored twice while Knowles, Becker and Koss also recorded RBIs.

Sophomore pitcher Brooke Billings (Clyde, Ohio) dropped to 4-3 on the year with the loss, tossing the first 3 1/3 innings before being relieved by freshman Paige Kiesewetter (Piqua, Ohio).

Capital opens Ohio Athletic Conference play as well as its 2014 home schedule this Saturday against Baldwin Wallace. First pitch of the twin bill is slated for 1 p.m. at Clowson Field.
