Softball Tallies School-Record 32 Runs in Win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Capital University softball team set a program-record for runs in a game Friday with a 32-1 victory over Johnson St. (Vt.) in a run-rule shortened five inning contest at the National Training Center Softball Complex.

The Crusaders (6-2 overall) lost their first contest of the day, a 7-0 setback against 13th-ranked Augustana (Ill.).

With the split, Capital, which is receiving votes in the latest NFCA Division III Top 25 Poll, matched its win total in Florida last season, when the team won the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title and reached the NCAA Tournament regional round.

The Crusaders' 32 runs against Johnson St. (0-4) eclipsed a previous school best of 23, recorded twice in 1985.

Capital pounded out 28 hits and tallied 10-run innings in the third and fifth. The Crusaders scored four times in the first inning and eight timed in the second frame.

Sophomore shortstop Therese Becker (South Euclid, Ohio) totaled five hits, two runs scored and three runs batted in. Junior centerfielder Kelsey Swain (Pickerington, Ohio) posted four hits, four runs scored and four RBIs, while junior left fielder LeAnna Cotton (Okeechobee, Fla.) registered four hits, including a double and a home run, four runs and four RBIs.

Freshman first baseman Amber Martinelli (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs. Sophomore catcher Sarah Nist (North Canton, Ohio) and freshman designated player Jessica Robinson (Beavercreek, Ohio) also knocked in three apiece.

In total, 13 different Crusaders recorded hits, including seven players with two or more.

Junior pitcher Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio) moved to 4-1 on the season with the win, allowing just one walk while striking out seven in just three innings of work. In the fourth, Patznick gave way to freshman Paige Kiesewetter (Piqua, Ohio), who allowed just one hit while striking out three in her career debut.

Against Augustana (2-1), Capital struggled to muster offense, posting just one hit, a two-out infield single in the bottom of the fifth by sophomore right fielder Ashley Knowles (Canton, Ohio).

The Vikings scored three in the second on a two-out, bases-clearing double, and didn't look back, finishing with 11 hits.

Patznick took her first loss of the season on the mound. Junior Brooke Billings (Clyde, Ohio) tossed the final five innings in relief.

The Crusaders continue play two weeks from Friday on March 14 at the two-day, four-game Salisbury (Md.) Tournament.
