CLERMONT, Fla. – The Capital University softball team pounded out 17 hits Thursday en route to a 15-0 victory in five innings against Lyndon St. (Vt.) at the National Training Center Softball Complex.
The victory completed a sweep on the day for the Crusaders (5-1 overall), who defeated Johnson St. (Vt.) 6-1 in the first game of the day.
Against Lyndon St. (0-6), Capital scored runs in each of the five innings to end the game by mercy rule.
Freshman designated player Marisa Koss (Ostrander, Ohio) belted two home runs and finished with three hits, three runs scored and three runs batted in. Sophomore shortstop Therese Becker (South Euclid, Ohio) also hit the first homer of her career, a three-run shot to deep right-center in the third inning, and finished with a team-best four RBIs.
Sophomore second baseman Brooklyn Staten (Grove City, Ohio) was 3-for-3 with four runs scored, while sophomore catcher Sarah Nist (North Canton, Ohio) finished 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Junior first baseman Maura Rose (Williamsport, Pa.) also homered for the Crusaders.
Junior pitcher Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio) picked up the win to improve to 3-1. Patznick shut down the Hornets, surrendering just two hits and one walk while striking out five.
Nist singled with two outs in the first to bring home Staten and put Capital on the board. Rose doubled the lead in the second with a home run before Koss made it 3-0 with a triple to right center, where she scored on a throwing error.
Home runs by Becker and Koss highlighted a five-run third frame. After a 1-2-3 inning for Patznick, the Crusaders crossed the plate six times in the fourth on a two-run single by junior left fielder LeAnna Cotton (Okeechobee, Fla.), a single by Becker and Koss' second homer of the game, a two-run shot off the scoreboard in left field.
Capital scored four times in the fourth inning to take control of the game against Johnson St. (0-1). Nist brought home Cotton, who doubled to lead off the frame, and Koss singled through the left side to plate Nist. After a first-and-third play brought home another run, sophomore right fielder Ashley Knowles (Canton, Ohio) singled through the right side to make it 5-0 Crusaders.
Nist and junior centerfielder Kelsey Swain (Pickerington, Ohio) led Capital with two hits, a run and an RBI apiece. Sophomore Emma Caputo (Columbus, Ohio) also knocked in a run, plating Swain on a single up the middle in the seventh.
The Crusaders conclude play in Florida tomorrow with games against No. 13 Augustana (Ill.) and Johnson St. at 9 and 11 a.m., respectively.
