Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team featured five scorers in double figures, but fell short in their season opener. Wittenberg University defeated Capital 70-67 on Saturday from Pam Evans Smith Arena.
Senior guard Shelby Sheets (Fayetteville, Ohio) led the Crusaders with 14 points and added four assists. She shot 6-for-11 from the field to also lead the team in field goal makes.
Wittenberg (1-0) shot 45.8 percent from the field as a team, led by Katelyn Haralamos' game-high 23 points. Haralamos burned the Crusaders by hitting all five three-point tries in their win. She finished 6-for-8 from the field and added five rebounds before fouling out.
Capital (0-1) grabbed an early lead in the opening minutes, jumping out 15-7 behind a pair of buckets by Nina Napolitano (Akron, Ohio) and Sheets making three straight as part of the run. Their lead ran to as high as 10 points midway through the first half before the Tigers began to claw back into the game with an 8-0 run. They gained the lead toward the backend of the half and lost it just once when Capital tied the game with 3:56 remaining in the game.
Sheets hit the game-tying shot with just under four minutes to go, but Wittenberg's Enri Small hit a three ball and then followed with layup to give the Tigers a five-point lead. Wittenberg went on a 6-0 run to break away. During this time, the Crusaders went 0-for-4 from the field and 2-for-6 from the free throw line.
Junior forward Kristen Thompson (Cincinnati, Ohio) and senior center Monica Heckman (Pitsburg, Ohio) each finished with 10 points. Heckman led the Crusaders with eight rebounds.
Napolitano recorded 13 points to set a new career high. Junior guard Jenna Erwin scored 11 points coming off of the bench. Junior guard Simonne Gage was unable to make a bucket from the floor, but chipped in eight assists and three steals.
Freshmen Annika Wachtman (Upper Arlington, Ohio), Meredith Ovies (Franklin, Tenn.), and Chelsea Pla (Macedonia, Ohio) each made their collegiate debuts. Ovies hit a three-point shot on her lone attempt.
Capital will now play in the Manchester Tournament, hosted by Manchester College (Ind.). Their first of two games will be held on Friday, Nov. 21 against Chicago University at 5 p.m.
