BEREA, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team tallied a marquee Ohio Athletic Conference victory over Baldwin Wallace (13-4 overall, 8-2 OAC) on Sunday afternoon, as the Crusaders took to the road for an 83-68 win.
A game which was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Ursprung Gymnasium, was postponed to a Sunday matinee matchup due to inclement weather.
Senior guard Cookie Geroski (Fostoria, Ohio) got the Crusaders off to a quick start in the first half, scoring four of Capital's first six points, en route to a 12 point first half on 4-6 shooting from the field, including a 3-4 mark from behind the arc.
Sophomore forward Kristen Thompson (Cincinnati, Ohio) and guard Jenna Erwin (Springfield, Ohio), as well as freshman guard Lauren Stefancin (Mentor, Ohio), combined with Geroski for 33 of the Crusaders' 38 points, on 11-15 shooting, in the opening half.
Capital jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, followed by a 22-16 run that ended up putting the Crusaders up by 12 points at the 6:15 mark in the first half.
However, the Yellow Jackets then trimmed the deficit to as few as six points, as the Crusaders held on to a two possession lead at halftime, 38-32.
As the second half of play unfolded, Baldwin Wallace took its first lead of the game, 43-42, at the 16:30 mark. Two minutes later, Capital quickly tied the game at 43 as Thompson connected on one of two free throw attempts.
Stefancin then entered the game at the 15:19 mark of the second half, at which that point she
had totaled six points on 2-3 shooting from three point range in one half, to which she topped easily in the final half, scoring 18 points on a perfect 5-5 mark from behind the arc.
In addition, Stefancin (at right) connected on three consecutive three point shots in a span of just under two minutes, followed by two additional three pointers in the remaining part of the game.
From the 14:30 mark, Capital outscored Baldwin Wallace 40-25, including an 11-0 run late in the final half, as the Crusaders wrapped up a 15 point victory.
Leading the way for the Crusaders was Stefancin, who scored a career-high 25 points in sixteen minutes of action off the bench, including 7-8 (88 percent) shooting from behind the arc.
Geroski followed with 16 points on 6-11 shooting, while hauling in six rebounds and four assists.
Thompson and Erwin also chipped in 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Six Capital players checked in with at least seven points on the afternoon.
In total, Capital connected on 25-54 shots from the field (46.3 percent), including 11-17 from behind the arc and 22-29 from the foul line. Conversely, Baldwin Wallace shot 41.3 percent from the field, including 11-26 from three point range.
With the win, the Crusaders (10-6 overall, 7-3 OAC) move to one game out of first place in the OAC standings, and are now set to host Heidelberg this coming Wednesday evening at the Capital Center.
Tip-off for that matchup is slated for 7:30 p.m.
