COLUMBUS – The Capital University softball team entered the championship round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament with a 10-2 victory over John Carroll Saturday but fell to eventual tournament champion Mount Union at Clowson Field.
The Crusaders (34-10 overall), the No. 1 seed in the tournament, dropped a 5-3 contest against Mount Union, which won all three of its games as the third seed to win the OAC Tournament title.
Capital, which took the conference regular season championship for the first time since 2002, now awaits the announcement of the NCAA Division III Championship field, which takes place Monday at 10 a.m. EST in a webcast on NCAA.com. Sixty teams are to be a part of the championship, which begins next week at eight regional sites.
Following the conclusion of the tournament Saturday, senior shortstop Devan Boggs (West Jefferson, Ohio), sophomore centerfielder Kelsey Swain (Pickerington, Ohio) and sophomore pitcher Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio) were named to the All-Tournament team.
In the John Carroll game, the Crusaders knocked 13 hits, putting up four runs in the top of the third to take a 6-1 advantage and control of the contest.

Against the Purple Raiders (25-11), Capital held a 2-1 lead until the top of the seventh, when Mount plated four runs to take a 5-2 advantage.
The Crusaders staged a mini-ralley in the bottom half as freshman Lacey Romero (Mechanicsburg, Ohio) homered to right. Boggs posted a hit later in the frame but was stranded.
