The Capital University softball team stayed hot Saturday with two more victories at Wilmington in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader in Wilmington, Ohio.
The Crusaders (24-8 overall, 12-2 OAC) outlasted the Quakers 10-6 in nine innings in the opener before closing the day with a 9-3 triumph. Capital is now alone in first place in the conference after Marietta was swept by John Carroll, which is now in second place, one game behind the Crusaders.
In the first game, Capital tallied seven runs in the top of the ninth inning to break open a tie game. Wilmington (19-11, 5-9) responded with three runs in the bottom half of the frame, but sophomore pitcher Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio) limited the damage to secure a win in relief to move to 12-4 on the season. Patznick tossed the final 3 1/3 innings of the contest.
Sophomore catcher Maura Rose (Williamsport, Pa.) provided the go-ahead hit in the ninth, knocking in sophomore centerfielder Kelsey Swain (Pickerington, Ohio) with a single. The Crusaders added six more runs after there were two outs, including a grand slam to centerfield by senior shortstop Devan Boggs (West Jefferson, Ohio). The home run was Boggs' team-leading 10th of the season.
Rose finished 3-for-5 with a home run, her seventh of the year, and three runs batted in. Boggs, freshman designated played Lacey Romero (Mechanicsburg, Ohio) and freshman third baseman Katlyn Simpson (Loudonville, Ohio) each totaled two hits. Boggs scored twice and knocked in four, while Romero also scored twice.
Capital tallied one run in each of the first three innings to take an early lead before the Quakers posted three in the bottom of the sixth to tie it. Wilmington committed five errors in the affair, compared to just one for the Crusaders.
The two teams fought to a 1-1 tie through the first three innings of the nightcap before Capital plated two in the top of the fourth and didn't look back, tallying eight runs over the final four frames.
Sophomore left fielder LeAnna Cotton (Okeechobee, Fla.) led the Crusaders with a double, home run, three runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Boggs recorded three hits and an RBI, while Simpson added two hits, two runs and an RBI. Romero plated two with a single through the right side in the top of the seventh.
Patznick allowed no earned runs for her 13th triumph of the season and her 10th complete game.
Capital visits Bethany (W.Va.) tomorrow at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader before hosting defending OAC champion Ohio Northern Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Clowson Field.
