COLUMBUS – The Capital University softball team suffered a rare shutout setback Sunday but recovered for a 3-1 victory over Denison in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader at Clowson Field.
The Crusaders (18-8 overall) dropped the opener 3-0.
In the second game, the Big Red (15-11) tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth after Capital had taken a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the third thanks to a run-scoring single to shallow left center by senior first baseman Lexi Majoy (Huron, Ohio).
In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore left fielder LeAnna Cotton (Okeechobee, Fla.) knocked a two-out, two-run double to deep centerfield to put the Crusaders ahead for good. One day after delivering a clutch throw to get a Muskingum runner at the plate to preserve the team's 7-6 victory, Cotton came up on the offensive side this time, knocking a line drive just out of the reach of the Denison centerfielder.
Sophomore Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio) pitched out of a two-on, two-out jam to finish her complete game win. Patznick (9-4) allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out seven in seven innings.
Seven different Capital players posted one hit in the affair.
In the first game of the day, the Crusaders were held hitless until the bottom of the sixth inning, when freshman third baseman Katlyn Simpson (Loudonville, Ohio) registered a one-out single through the left side.
Capital recorded two more hits in the bottom of the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate with one out, but was unable to take advantage of the opportunity. The loss was just the third in the team's last 14 contests.
Sophomore pitcher Brooke Billings (Clyde, Ohio) took the tough-luck loss, dropping to 9-4 on the year. She scattered five hits and two walks over seven innings of work.
Senior shortstop Devan Boggs (West Jefferson, Ohio) was 0-for-3 in the affair, seeing her 20-game hitting streak come to a close.
The Crusaders begin a busy week with an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader this Tuesday at Baldwin Wallace. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Berea, Ohio.
