COLUMBUS – The Capital University softball team jumped out to quick leads twice Monday and held on for a pair of victories against Transylvania (Ky.) in a non-conference doubleheader at Clowson Field.

The Crusaders (12-6 overall) took the first contest 8-0 in five innings by mercy rule before winning the second by a 6-2 count.

In the opener, senior first baseman Lexi Majoy (Huron, Ohio) double and homered with two runs scored and two batted in to lead Capital, which plated two runs in the first and one in the second before erupting for a five-run bottom of the fourth inning.

Sophomore pitcher Brooke Billings (Clyde, Ohio) limited the Pioneers (4-16) to just two hits in a complete-game shutout. Billings did not walk a batter and struck out a pair to move to 6-3 on the campaign.

Sophomore center fielder Kelsey Swain (Pickerington, Ohio) added two hits, two runs and two RBIs in the winning effort.

After the Crusaders plated two in the first on a Transylvania error, Majoy sent a ball deep over the left-center field fence with two outs in the bottom of the third to increase the Capital advantage to 3-0.

Freshman third baseman Katlyn Simpson (Loudonville, Ohio) knocked in a run with an infield single before Swain and Majoy posted consecutive run-scoring hits. Following a walk, freshman designated player Sarah Nist (North Canton, Ohio) knocked a base hit to left to score Majoy.

In the second game, Majoy and Nist plated a run each with hits in the first inning to give the Crusaders an early lead again. Nist struck again in the third with a two-run double, and senior right fielder Katie Neely (Sugar Grove, Ohio) knocked in a run with a single down the right field line.

The Pioneers responded with two in the top of the fourth before Capital padded its lead in the bottom of the fifth on a pinch-hit fielder's choice by freshman Lacey Romero (Mechanicsburg, Ohio).

Sophomore pitcher Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio) went the distance in Game 2, scattering six hits and a pair of walks while striking out four in seven innings.

Swain finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Nist was 2-of-3 with two runs and three RBIs.

The Crusaders resume non-league play Wednesday against Mount St. Joseph. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Clowson Field.
