COLUMBUS – The Capital University softball team recovered nicely from a first-game loss Friday to defeat John Carroll 11-4 in the nightcap of an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Clowson Field.
The Crusaders (10-5 overall, 3-1 OAC) were shut out 5-0 in the opener before erupting for 17 hits to defeat the Blue Streaks 11-4 in the second game. Capital was the visiting team in both affairs as the twin bill was originally scheduled to take place at John Carroll but was moved to Columbus due to field conditions.
Sophomore catcher Maura Rose (Williamsport, Pa.) finished 3-for-5 with a run scored and five runs batted in, including three on a booming home run in the first inning. Senior first baseman Lexi Majoy (Huron, Ohio) also homered and knocked in a pair, while freshman left fielder Sarah Nist (North Canton, Ohio) and senior right fielder Katie Neely (Sugar Grove, Ohio) also plated two runs apiece.
Sophomore pitcher Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio) relieved starter Devan Boggs with one out in the third inning and went the rest of the way to move to 5-3 on the season.
Five Crusaders crossed the plate in the top of the first. Three batters after Rose's home run, Neely knocked a two-run double to right center to score Nist and freshman second baseman Brooklyn Staten (Grove City, Ohio).
John Carroll (11-5, 3-1) scored four in the bottom of the third to make it 6-4, which remained the score until the top of the sixth, when a Rose single and a Nist double put Capital ahead 9-4.
The Crusaders added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh on Majoy's second homer of the season.
In the opener, Capital was outhit 12-4 and the Blue Streaks tallied runs in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings.
Sophomore pitcher Brooke Billings (Clyde, Ohio) took the loss to drop to 5-3 on the season. Billings pitched the first 3 1/3 innings before being relieved by Patznick.
Boggs, Rose, Nist and freshman designated player Katlyn Simpson (Loudonville, Ohio) totaled one hit apiece to lead the Crusader offense.
Capital returns to play Monday against Transylvania (Ky.). The first game of the non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Clowson Field and is the Crusaders' first true home event of the season.
