The Capital University softball team hit four home runs in two games and senior shortstop Devan Boggs hit for the cycle in the first game Saturday as the Crusaders swept Heidelberg in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader in Tiffin, Ohio.
Capital (9-5 overall, 2-0 OAC) took the first game by a 3-1 margin before scoring twice in the top of the seventh in Game 2 to post a 7-5 triumph.
In the opener, Boggs, a native of West Jefferson, Ohio, was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. She tripled to lead off the contest, doubled in the second, singled in a run in the fourth and homered in the seventh to complete the cycle and give the Crusaders a key insurance run.
Sophomore pitcher Brooke Billings (Clyde, Ohio) tossed a complete-game two-hitter, allowing only an unearned run while striking out three.
Senior first baseman Lexi Majoy (Huron, Ohio) registered two hits and an RBI for Capital, which outhit the 'Berg (6-6, 0-2) by a 9-2 count. Sophomore designated hitter LeAnna Cotton (Okeechobee, Fla.) added a hit and a run scored for the Crusaders.
In the nightcap, Capital jumped out to a 5-0 advantage, tallying one run each in the first five frames. Boggs, Majoy and Cotton each hit solo home runs, while sophomore catcher Maura Rose (Williamsport, Pa.) and senior right fielder Katie Neely (Sugar Grove, Ohio) posted RBI hits.
After Heidelberg scored five unanswered over the fifth and sixth innings to tie the score at 5-5, Rose came up big with a two-out double to score sophomore centerfielder Kelsey Swain (Pickerington, Ohio) from first base. Freshman pinch hitter Lacey Romero (Mechanicsburg, Ohio) added an insurance run with a triple to right that plated Rose.
Billings, who replaced starting pitcher Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio) with no outs in the fifth, retired three of four hitters in the bottom of the seventh to improve to 5-2 on the season. Patznick struck out six in five innings of work.
The Crusaders return to non-conference play Wednesday at Bethany (W.Va.). The doubleheader is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Capital's home doubleheader against Denison originally scheduled for Sunday has been postponed to Sunday, April 14, at 1 p.m. at Clowson Field.
