Capital University sophomore Maura Rose hit a walk-off home run to cap a seventh-inning rally Saturday in the softball team's 5-4 victory over SUNY Cortland (N.Y.) on the final day of the two-day Salisbury Tournament in Salisbury, Md.
The Crusaders (7-5 overall) were defeated 6-2 against Ithaca (N.Y.) in their first game of the day. The team finished 1-3 in tournament play.
Trailing 4-3 entering its last at-bat against Cortland (5-6), Capital evened the score when sophomore centerfielder Kelsey Swain (Pickerington, Ohio) led off the frame with a triple and scored on a throwing error. One batter later, Rose (above) sent her first homer of the year over the center field fence to give the Crusaders a split against the Red Dragons for the tournament.
Swain and Rose each finished with two hits for the game, while senior shortstop Devan Boggs (West Jefferson, Ohio) was 3-for-4, including a solo home run, her first long ball of the year. Capital plated one run each in the first, third and fifth innings. Senior first baseman Lexi Majoy's sacrifice fly in the fifth tied the game at 3-3 before Cortland retook the lead in the top of the sixth.
Sophomore pitcher Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio) picked up the win to move to 4-3 for the season. She tossed the final 4 1/3 innings of the affair.
In the opener, the Crusaders were held to just five hits, three of which came in a two-run top of the seventh inning. Sophomore pinch hitter Emma Caputo (Columbus, Ohio) knocked a two-out, two-run single to left to help Capital avoid a second consecutive shutout.
The Bombers (5-4) took the early lead with three runs in the bottom of the second, later adding insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Sophomore pitcher Brooke Billings (Clyde, Ohio) dropped to 3-2 on the season in the loss, surrendering five runs (one earned) in 3 2/3 innings of work. Patznick finished the final 2 1/3 innings of the contest.
Senior right fielder Katie Neely (Sugar Grove, Ohio) led the Crusaders with two hits. Boggs and freshman second baseman Brooklyn Staten (Grove City, Ohio) also tallied hits.
Capital continues non-conference play this Thursday in its 2013 home opener. The Crusaders welcome Denison to Clowson Field for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
