The Capital University softball team pounded out 17 hits in a pair of games Friday but came away with two losses on the first day of the two-day Salisbury Tournament in Salisbury, Md.
The Crusaders (6-4 overall) were defeated 11-9 in the opener against SUNY Cortland (N.Y.) before suffering a 5-0 setback against 18th-ranked Salisbury in the team's second contest of the day.
Against Cortland (5-4), Capital dug out of a 6-0 hole through one inning to tie the affair at 6-6 through three. The Red Dragons tallied three in the fifth and two more in the sixth to retake control of the game before the Crusaders nearly rallied from three down in the seventh.
Senior shortstop Devan Boggs (West Jefferson, Ohio; at right) led Capital with three hits, two runs and a run batted in. Seniors Lexi Majoy (Huron, Ohio), Katie Neely (Sugar Grove, Ohio) and sophomore Kelsey Swain (Pickerington, Ohio) each totaled two hits. Swain knocked in three runs, while Neely knocked in one. Freshman third baseman Katlyn Simpson (Loudonville, Ohio) and freshman catcher Sarah Nist (North Canton, Ohio) plated one run apiece.
Sophomore pitcher Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio) dropped to 3-2 on the year with the loss, striking out six in 4 2/3 innings of work. Sophomore Brooke Billings (Clyde, Ohio) both started and finished the contest, re-entering for Patznick in the bottom of the fifth.
Cortland and Capital combined for 26 hits and eight errors in the game.
In the Crusaders' second contest of the day, Salisbury (13-2) tallied runs in the second, third and fifth innings, and scored twice in the sixth. Capital, which struck out 15 times against Sea Gull pitching, was shut out for the first time this season.
Boggs led the Crusaders with two hits, while Majoy and freshman left fielder Brooklyn Staten (Grove City, Ohio) each posted a single.
Capital continues play at Salisbury tomorrow against Ithaca (N.Y.) at 9:30 a.m. The team plays Cortland for a second time at 11:30 a.m. to close out the tournament.
