The Capital University women's basketball team fired on all cylinders offensively in the second half Wednesday to break open a close game and defeat previously unbeaten Heidelberg 75-59 in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Tiffin, Ohio.
The Crusaders (3-2 overall, 1-0 OAC) shot a sizzling 61.3 percent (19-of-31) from the floor in the second half and outscored the 'Berg 49-36 in the period.
Senior forward Jamie Caton (Hilliard, Ohio) led all scorers with 20 points to go along with team bests of eight rebounds and five assists.
Senior guard Cookie Geroski (Fostoria, Ohio) and freshman forward Colleen Fondessy (Fostoria, Ohio) each tallied 11 of their 13 points in the second half.
Sophomore forward Kristen Thompson (Cincinnati, Ohio) contributed nine points and six rebounds, while junior guard Shelby Sheets (Fayetteville, Ohio) chipped in with eight points and five rebounds.
Capital shot 50 percent (29-for-58) from the field for the contest and held Heidelberg (5-1, 0-1) to just 39.7 percent (23-for-58) on the other end. The Crusaders also held a 43-32 rebounding advantage, including a 16-11 edge on the offensive glass.
Capital held a lead of seven points on two different occasions in the first half, including the 3:24 mark after a free throw by Caton. The 'Berg eventually tied the game at 23-23 with under a minute to play in the frame before three consecutive points by Caton made it a 26-23 game at the half.
In the second, the Crusaders scored six of the first seven points in the half and never looked back. Capital pushed its lead to double digits with 15:48 to play following a 3-pointer by Geroski, then took its largest advantage of the frame with 5:50 on the clock after a pair of Geroski free throws.
Capital outscored Heidelberg 34-24 in the paint and totaled 18 points off turnovers, compared to just eight for the 'Berg.
The Crusaders host an OAC contest for the first time this season Saturday against Baldwin Wallace, which received votes in the most recent D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. at the Capital Center.
