The Capital University women's basketball team made at least half of its field goal attempts for the third time this season Wednesday night in a 76-61 victory at Heidelberg in an Ohio Athletic Conference affair in Tiffin, Ohio.
Senior forward Stacy Timmerman (New Bremen, Ohio) and junior forward Jamie Caton (Hilliard, Ohio) scored 20 and 18 points, respectively, to lead the Crusaders (13-5 overall, 8-3 OAC). After three consecutive 20-plus point efforts, Timmerman is now just 42 points shy of reaching 1,000 for her career.
Capital, which won its third consecutive road game, shot 50 percent (31-of-62) from the floor while holding the 'Berg (5-13, 1-10) to just 36.7 percent shooting. The Crusaders also forced 22 turnovers while committing just 13 of their own on the other end.
"Our defense was a little shaky at first, but then we did a very, very good job of guarding their scorers," Capital coach Dixie Jeffers said. "We shared the ball and ran the floor well offensively. We are plying good basketball right now."
Senior guard Rebekah Will (Millbury, Ohio; above), freshman guard Shelby Sigman (Bellbrook, Ohio) and freshman forward Kristen Thompson (Cincinnati, Ohio) each contributed with eight points. Will filled out the stat sheet with seven rebounds and four assists, while Caton also added five rebounds and a game-high six assists.
"Our frontcourt played very well," Jeffers said. "Stacy Timmerman continues to be on fire, and they had a hard time guarding Jamie. We got some good looks inside."
After Heidelberg jumped out to a 17-10 lead at the 13:06 mark of the first half, Capital settled in and eventually took a 21-20 lead with 7:41 left in the half on a 3-point play by Thompson.
The Crusaders quickly pushed their lead to seven with 5:13 on the clock and led by the same margin at 36-29 heading into the locker room.
The Capital advantage dwindled down to 39-38 just under two minutes into the second period before baskets by Will, Thompson and Caton pushed it back to a seven-point lead with 16:42 to play.
The 'Berg again made a run to cut the lead to 51-49 with 10:49 to go, but the Crusades scored two possessions later and led by no less than four the rest of the way.
Capital doubled up Heidelberg in both points off turnovers (26-13) and points in the paint (24-12). The 'Berg held an 18-9 advantage in second-chance points.
The Crusaders conclude their four-game road swing this Saturday at No. 23 Mount Union. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. and is the first game of a women's-men's doubleheader.
The contest will be televised on tape delay by SportsTime Ohio at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
