COLUMBUS – The Capital University women's basketball team used a stout defensive effort and free throw shooting to outlast Baldwin Wallace 53-44 in an Ohio Athletic Conference slugfest at the Capital Center.
Neither team found an offensive rhythm in the contest, but the Crusaders (6-2 overall, 2-0 OAC) held the Yellow Jackets to 23.3 percent from the floor, including a 16.1 percent clip in the second half.
Senior forward
Stacy Timmerman (New Bremen, Ohio) tallied 13 points and 11 rebounds for Capital, which shot just 28.6 percent from the floor but made 17-of-30 free throws.
"I'm extremely proud of this young bunch of kids and their perseverance and will not to give up," Capital coach
Dixie Jeffers. "We had every shot we asked to have, but it just wasn't our day shooting. It's one of those games we grinded out that's going to help us as a team."
Junior forward
Jamie Caton (Hilliard, Ohio; pictured above) added 13 points, five rebounds and three blocks.
The Crusaders led by as many as six points in the first half, but Baldwin Wallace (3-3, 0-2) closed the half on a 6-0 run to take a 24-22 advantage into the locker room.
Capital broke a 29-29 score, the eighth tie of the contest, with a 7-0 run to take a 36-29 lead with 10:34 to play. The Yellow Jackets got no closer than four points as the Crusaders knocked down 15 free throws in the period.
Capital outscored the Yellow Jackets 28-16 on points in the paint and held a 15-9 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Crusaders continue OAC play next Saturday against John Carroll. Tip-off at the Capital Center is slated for 3 p.m.
