COLUMBUS – The Capital University volleyball team put forth a strong effort Wednesday night but fell just short in a 25-23, 25-17, 25-12 defeat against Wooster in a non-conference matchup at the Capital Center Performance Arena.
Sophomore Marissa Price (Tiffin, Ohio; at right) led the Crusaders (6-14) with nine kills and five digs, while senior Leanne Schaefer (Verona, Wis.) contributed with seven kills.
Senior libero Shannon Quinn (Miamisburg, Ohio), who entered the week ranked third in the nation in digs per set, led the defense with 21 digs. Freshmen Katie Weilbacher (Grove City, Ohio) and Angie Fisher (Celina, Ohio) recorded 14 and 10 assists, respectively. Sophomore Melissa Verhoff (Ottawa, Ohio) added six kills.
In the first set, Capital held a 19-16 advantage before a run by the Fighting Scots (12-5) tied the set at 20-20. Wooster then took five of the last eight points to close the set.
The Fighting Scots continued their momentum in the second set. Wooster broke an 8-8 tie and won 10 of the next 11 points to take a commanding lead. The Crusaders made a mini-run behind the serve of freshman Olivia Arledge (Frankfort, Ohio) to cut the deficit to five before the Fighting Scots regained control and won the set.
In the third, Wooster jumped out to a 9-4 lead and didn't look back, scoring the last six points in the match.
Capital returns to action this weekend as it hosts two play dates at the Capital Center. The Crusaders take on league foe John Carroll on Friday at 3 p.m. before a 7 p.m. match against Albion (Mich.).
