The Capital University volleyball team used a strong offensive performance Tuesday to defeat Wilmington 25-13, 25-16, 25-13 in an Ohio Athletic Conference match-up in Wilmington, Ohio.
The Crusaders (10-16 overall, 2-2 OAC) hit a stellar .472 in the match, committing just three hitting errors on their way to a victory.
The Quakers dropped to 6-14 overall and 0-4 in the league with the loss.
Freshman Olivia Arledge (Frankfort, Ohio) led the offense with 12 kills on no errors and a team-best three blocks. Senior Leanne Schaefer (Verona, Wis.) and sophomore Melissa Verhoff (Ottawa, Ohio; at right) combined for 17 kills up front.
Freshman Katie Weilbacher (Grove City, Ohio) posted five kills, a team-high 19 assists, three service aces and eight digs. Sophomore Marissa Price (Tiffin, Ohio) registered five kills, 13 assists and four digs.
Senior Shannon Quinn (Miamisburg, Ohio), who entered the week ranked No. 1 in the nation in digs per set, led the defense with 13 digs.
A 6-0 run, sparked by the serve of sophomore Kelly Leonard (Cincinnati, Ohio), who led the team with four aces, put Capital ahead 15-9 en route to a first-set win. The Crusaders jumped out to an 8-3 advantage in the second and didn't look back, helped again midway through the set by Leonard's serve.
Capital won the first three points of the third and expanded its lead throughout the set.
The Crusaders resume OAC play this Saturday at Mount Union, which is currently ranked 16th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 Coaches Poll. Match time is slated for 4 p.m. in Alliance, Ohio.
