Box Score 2 The Capital University volleyball team earned its first victory of the 2012 season Saturday, posting a 1-1 record on the second day of the Hiram Tournament in Hiram, Ohio.
The Crusaders (1-8 overall) defeated Frostburg (Md.) State 25-15, 25-16, 25-12, putting 20th-year head coach Pam Briggs just one win shy of No. 400 for her career.
Capital couldn't continue its momentum later in the day, suffering a 25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 25-21 setback against Geneva (Pa.).
Following play, senior Leanne Schaefer (Verona, Wis.; at right) was named to the All-Tournament team after posting 34 kills and 13 blocks for the weekend. The team finished 1-3 for the two-day tournament after setbacks against Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) and host Hiram on Friday.
"The girls played outstanding all weekend against tough competition," Briggs said. "I'm proud of the girls for their hard work and dedication. We're looking forward to getting back to the Capital Center for our next match against Ohio Wesleyan."
Senior libero Shannon Quinn (Miamisburg, Ohio) totaled a team-best 103 digs to pace the back row. Sophomores Melissa Verhoff (Ottawa, Ohio) and Marissa Price (Tiffin, Ohio) contributed with 45 and 42 kills, respectively, in the four matches. Verhoff added seven blocks up front.
The Crusaders resume non-conference play Wednesday at home against cross-town rival Ohio Wesleyan. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Capital Center.
