COLUMBUS – The Capital University volleyball team finished with a 3-1 record in four matches over the weekend at the Capital Center.
Hosting a pair of play dates, the Crusaders (9-14 overall, 1-1 OAC) picked up wins over conference rival John Carroll and non-conference foes Albion (Mich.) and Allegheny (Pa.).
On Saturday, Capital was downed by Alma in a tightly-contested 25-22, 25-21, 25-21 match before taking care of Allegheny 25-16, 25-16, 25-17.
Against the Fighting Scots (12-6), the Crusaders fought to early leads in each set, but were unable to hang on in any frame. Middle hitters Leanne Schaefer (Verona, Wis.) and Melissa Verhoff (Ottawa, Ohio) each had 11 kills, while sophomore Kelly Leonard (Cincinnati, Ohio) totaled 30 digs and seven service aces in the back row.
Sophomore Marissa Price (Tiffin, Ohio) added 20 assists and 10 digs, while freshman Katie Weilbacher (Grove City, Ohio) registered 11 assists and 21 digs.
In the match against the Gators (4-14), the Crusaders hit .227 as a team and were crisp in all facets, finishing the match in just one hour and eight minutes. Again, Schaefer and Verhoff recorded 11 kills apiece, while senior Shannon Quinn (Miamisburg, Ohio) led the defense with 19 digs.
Sophomore Marissa Price (Tiffin, Ohio) flirted with a triple-double, tallying six kills, 21 assists and 13 digs. Sophomore Kelly Leonard (Cincinnati, Ohio) added 13 digs.
Saturday's matches represented the last non-conference contests of the season for Capital. The Crusaders continue play next Saturday, Oct. 6, against Heidelberg. Match time is set for 11:30 a.m. on Homecoming Saturday at Capital.
