The Capital University volleyball team put a scare into the No. 8 team in the country, but couldn't sustain the momentum in a 25-9, 25-13, 22-25, 25-16 loss against Hope (Mich.) on the second and final day of the Capital-Otterbein Opening Tournament at the Capital Center.
The Crusaders (0-4 overall) were defeated earlier in the day by Thomas More by a narrow 26-24, 25-23, 25-22 count.
Following play, senior libero Shannon Quinn (Miamisburg, Ohio) was named to the All-Tournament team after a stellar weekend in the back row.
Against Thomas More (1-2), junior Sanaya El-Naggar (Mason, Ohio), senior Leanne Schaefer (Verona, Wis.; at right) and freshman Olivia Arledge (Frankfort, Ohio) tallied seven kills apiece, while sophomore Melissa Verhoff (Ottawa, Ohio) added six of her own.
Quinn registered a team-best 28 digs for the Crusaders, who went back and forth with the Saints throughout the match, never trailing by more than three points in the first and third sets.
Sophomore Marissa Price (Tiffin, Ohio) added 14 assists and 12 digs.
In other action Saturday at the Capital Center, Hope defeated Transylvania in three sets before Transy recovered for a 3-1 victory over Thomas More.
Capital returns to action this Wednesday at Denison. Match time is set for 7 p.m. in Granville, Ohio.
