The Capital University volleyball team fought back from two sets down to draw even and force a fifth Wednesday, but fell just short in a 25-11, 29-27, 25-27, 16-25, 15-10 defeat at Denison in a non-conference showdown at Granville, Ohio.
After falling behind 2-0, the Crusaders (0-5 overall) won a tightly-contested third set, then cruised in the fourth to force a decisive set.
The two teams went back and forth to start the fifth, but the Big Red (5-0) posted a late run to take the set and the match.
Junior Sanaya El-Naggar (Mason, Ohio) led the offense with 11 kills to go along with 13 digs, while senior Shannon Quinn (Miamisburg, Ohio) paced the defense with 18 digs as well as three service aces.
Freshmen setters Katie Weilbacher (Grove City, Ohio; at right) and Angie Fisher (Celina, Ohio) tallied 17 and 16 assists, respectively. Senior Leanne Schaefer (Verona, Wis.) added seven kills and two blocks.
The Crusaders resume play at the Hiram Tournament this weekend. Capital takes on Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) and Hiram at 5 and 7 p.m., respectively, to begin tournament play on Friday.
