COLUMBUS – The Capital University volleyball team took leads in each set Saturday, but came just short of sustaining those leads in a 25-22, 26-24, 25-20 setback against Baldwin-Wallace in an Ohio Athletic Conference affair at the Capital Center.
The Crusaders (10-19 overall, 2-5 OAC) led by three or more points during at least one point in each set, but couldn't keep the momentum going in any case.
Senior Leanne Schaefer (Verona, Wis.; at right) led Capital with nine kills, while sophomore Melissa Verhoff (Ottawa, Ohio) totaled eight kills, five digs and a pair of blocks.
Senior Shannon Quinn (Miamisburg, Ohio) and freshman Natalie Briggs (Pataskala, Ohio) led the defense with 17 and 16 digs, respectively.
Freshman Katie Weilbacher (Grove City, Ohio) added a team-best 17 assists along with eight digs and two service aces.
Tied at 9-9 in the first set, the Crusaders rode the serve of sophomore Kelly Leonard (Cincinnati, Ohio) to a 13-9 advantage before Baldwin Wallace (12-15, 4-3) rebounded to narrow its deficit with a three-point run. The two teams went back and forth before a three-point sprint put the Yellow Jackets ahead 24-20. Capital withstood a pair of set points before BW ended the period with a kill.
The two teams traded points again in the second, with the Crusaders taking a 23-19 advantage on a block by Verhoff and freshman Olivia Arledge (Frankfort, Ohio). Following a timeout, the Yellow Jackets scored three straight and withstood a pair of match points to tie it a 24-all. BW tallied the last two points to take a 2-0 match lead.
In the third, Capital jumped out to a commanding 9-3 lead before a 7-1 Yellow Jackets run made it 10-10. Baldwin Wallace went on to take six of the last 10 points in the set to take the match.
