COLUMBUS – The Capital University volleyball team suffered back-to-back setbacks Friday on the first day of the Capital-Otterbein Opening Tournament at the Capital Center.
The Crusaders (0-2 overall) fell against Bethany 21-25, 25-14, 25-19, 25-23 in the opener before losing by a score of 25-18, 25-16, 25-15 against Calvin (Mich.), which is ranked No. 3 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Top 25.
In the first match, Capital rode the hot serve of junior Sanaya El-Naggar (Mason, Ohio) midway through the first set, turning a 12-11 lead into a 20-12 advantage on the way to a first-set victory.
Bethany (1-0) stymied the Crusader attack in the second set, then took closely-contested third and fourth sets.
El-Naggar totaled a team-high 13 kills to go along with 13 digs, while freshman Olivia Arledge (Frankfort, Ohio) registered 10 kills in her collegiate debut. Senior Shannon Quinn (Miamisburg, Ohio; at right) recorded a team-best 26 digs in the back row. Sophomore Marissa Price (Tiffin, Ohio) added 13 assists and six digs.
In the nightcap, Calvin (2-0) jumped out to a 10-5 advantage and didn't look back. Capital fought valiantly for the duration of the match but was unable to hold back the Knights' potent attack.
El-Naggar led the Crusaders with 13 kills and 10 digs, while Quinn added 14 digs. Senior Leanne Schaefer (Verona, Wis.) and freshman Katie Weilbacher (Grove City, Ohio) each contributed with four kills.
In other matches at Capital, Calvin defeated Transylvania (Ky.) in three sets and Bethany later knocked off Transy in five.
The Crusaders return to action tomorrow with contests against Thomas More (9:30 a.m.) and eighth-ranked Hope (12 p.m.).
