COLUMBUS – The Capital University volleyball team took a set off of perennial Ohio Athletic Conference power Heidelberg on Homecoming Saturday, but was unable to continue the trend in a 25-16, 25-23, 26-28, 25-22 setback at the
Capital Center.
The Crusaders (9-16 overall, 1-2 OAC) turned what appeared to be a three-set loss into a thrilling, back-and-forth affair.
After Heidelberg (15-6, 3-1) took a two-set advantage and a 20-15 lead in the third, Capital won eight of the next 11 points to tie the frame at 23-23. The 'Berg, which has won consecutive regular season conference titles, had a set point at 25-24 but a solo block by senior Leanne Schaefer (Verona, Wis.) tied it again and the Crusaders won three of the last four points to force a fourth set.
Capital continued its momentum in the fourth, taking a 15-10 advantage before Heidelberg clawed its way back to take a 19-18 lead. The two teams went back and forth before the 'Berg won the last three points of the stanza to take the match.
Freshman middle hitter Olivia Arledge (Frankfort, Ohio) led the Crusaders with a team-best 16 kills, while Schaefer added 13 along with four blocks. Sophomore Marissa Price (Tiffin, Ohio) flirted with a triple-double, tallying nine kills, 21 assists and 15 digs.
Senior Shannon Quinn (Miamisburg, Ohio) continued her stellar campaign in the back row with a match-high 43 digs.
The two teams were nearly identical in each statistical category except for blocks, where Heidelberg posted a 13.5-5 advantage.
