The Capital University men's soccer team outshot its opponent during every period Saturday, but came away with the same number of goals in a 1-1 tie in double overtime against Kalamazoo (Mich.) on the second day of the Ketner Classic in Angola, Ind.
The Crusaders (2-2-1 overall) outshot the Hornets 14-4 in the contest, including 10-3 after halftime and 4-0 during the two overtime periods.
"We lacked some confidence in front of the net," Capital coach Alan Yost said. "We missed some opportunities. We'll need better composure on the ball as well as improved ability to possess and finish our opportunities (going forward)."
Capital was on the board first as senior Al Argyris (Centerville, Ohio; at right) knocked in his third goal of the season, placing a perfect strike into the top left corner of the net from 20 yards out. The 10th-minute score tied Argyris for the team lead in goals with sophomore R.G. Florey (Westerville, Ohio), who tallied twice last night against Trine.
Kalamazoo (2-1-1) responded to tie the contest in the 37th minute, drawing a foul deep in in the Crusaders' back third and putting away a penalty kick.
Junior goalkeeper Bob Weisgarber (Columbus, Ohio) made one save. Junior Tim McCarthy (Dayton, Ohio) paced the team with three shots, while Argyris, freshmen Josh Spaw (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Mario Suarez (Strongsville, Ohio) finished with two apiece.
"I thought our freshmen played very well today," Yost said. "We have several who have shown an ability not only to contribute, but to stand out."
