WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Capital University men's soccer team was back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 4 for the first round of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament. As the sixth seed, Capital faced off against the three seeded Wilmington College. As to be expected in a postseason game, it would be a thriller, as 90 minutes and even two overtime periods were not enough to determine a winner. After ending play in a 1-1 tie, the Comets would fall 3-2 in penalty kicks. With the result, Capital ends their season with a record of 4-10-3 overall and 3-4-1 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Quakers raise their record to 13-4-3 and move on to the OAC Tournament semifinals.
In this win or go home scenario, it was clear that both teams put a heavy priority on their defense. Neither team would crack the scoreboard in the first 45 minutes of play, and it would not be until the 73rd minute of play that Wilmington would find the back of the net and jump out to a 1-0 lead.
With the season on the line and their backs against the wall, the Comets would come through with a huge goal of their own in the 87th minute. Thanks to some pretty passing from
Cade Wurstner and
Christian Monzalvo,
Wassim Metatla sent one home to tie the game at one with three minutes remaining in regulation.
There would not be much action in the first 10 minute overtime period, with both teams content on playing solid defense. However, the pace began to pick up in the second overtime segment. With just four minutes remaining before penalty kicks the Comets manufactured a great scoring opportunity, but a one timer from Metatla would miss just wide left.
The tone was set in the penalty kick portion by the Wilmington goalkeeper, who made two great saves on the first two Capital attempts. Playing from behind,
Jackson Terry and
Edvin Segerstrom would capitalize on their attempts to give the Comets some life and bring the PK score to 3-2. However, needing a score on their fifth attempt, the try would miss high, allowing the Quakers to advance.
Wassim Metatla would lead the Comet offense in this one, recording five of the team's 13 shots. He would score the team's lone goal in the contest, finishing with three goals on the season.
Goalkeeper
Ethan Ogden would finish the game with four saves, bringing his season total to 63. The senior finishes his career with 164 total saves.
