COLUMBUS – The Capital University men's soccer team took advantage of its opportunities Tuesday to score a 1-0 victory over Kenyon in a non-conference affair at Bernlohr Stadium.
With the win, the Crusaders (3-2-1 overall) pushed their unbeaten streak to three contests. The Lords dropped to 2-2 with the defeat.
"It was a good game as far as us advancing with our possession," Capital coach Alan Yost said. "We just became too one-sided in possession and lacked scoring opportunities. They were very organized and very big."
Senior Al Argyris (Centerville, Ohio) deposited Capital's lone goal in the 49th minute. At the top of the box, Argyris passed to junior Nick Eley (Pickerington, Ohio; at right), who gave it right back in front of the net to Argyris, who beat the keeper with ease.
In the first half, Kenyon outshot the Crusaders 5-1 but neither team seriously threatened to score.
Capital held off a furious Kenyon push in the second half as play became increasingly physical. The Lords outshot the Crusaders 7-1 in the period, but CU hung on for the win.
"I thought at the end of the game we understood the situation," Yost said. "We were up a goal and just preserved the lead … I told the guys it wasn't an attractive win, but it was a win."
Junior goalkeeper Dylan Beck (Wharton, Ohio) tallied six saves to record the shutout.
"I thought Dylan did a fantastic job today of organizing and communicating," Yost said. "The reason he did well was because he organized the defense to prevent shots, not because he had to make fantastic saves."
Capital continues its four-match, non-conference home stand this Friday at 2 p.m. against Defiance as part of a men's-women's doubleheader at Bernlohr Stadium.
