COLUMBUS – The Capital University volleyball team wrapped up its 2012 regular season Saturday with a 25-23, 25-15, 25-16 setback against rival Otterbein in an Ohio Athletic Conference match at the Capital Center.
With the loss, the Crusaders hold the No. 7 seed in the OAC Tournament and will take on the Cardinals (23-7 overall, 8-1 OAC) in a rematch this Tuesday in Westerville in the quarterfinal round.
Prior to Saturday's match, seniors Shannon Quinn (Miamisburg, Ohio) and Leanne Schaefer (Verona, Wis.) were recognized prior to their last home match. Quinn (at top, right) entered the week ranked first in the nation in digs per set, while Schaefer (at top, left) currently leads the team in hitting percentage and blocks.
Capital (11-20, 3-6) gave the 13th-ranked Cardinals all they could handle in the first set, holding a late 22-20 advantage before Otterbein took five of the last six points to claim the set.
The Cardinals broke open a 10-10 tie in the second set, winning eight of the last nine points in the period to take a two-set advantage. The Crusaders took a timeout after falling behind 13-5 in the third set and made a mini-run to cut the deficit to 17-13, but Otterbein took eight of the last 11 to end the match.
Freshman Olivia Arledge (Frankfort, Ohio) led Capital with nine kills, while Schaefer and fellow middle hitter Melissa Verhoff (Ottawa, Ohio) tallied six apiece. Quinn led the defense with 12 digs, and freshmen Katie Weilbacher (Grove City, Ohio) and Angie Fisher (Celina, Ohio) combined for 23 assists and 12 digs.
The Crusaders' match at Otterbein on Tuesday is scheduled for 7 p.m.
