Delaware, Ohio – The Capital women's soccer team was back on the road Tuesday night, taking on the Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops at Jay Martin Soccer Complex for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Comets earned a 3-0 shutout, improving to 7-2 on the season. Capital scored all three of its goals within a 19-minute span of the second half.
The first half was a defensive standoff, with neither side finding the back of the net. Capital totaled seven shots to Ohio Wesleyan's (3-4-4) six, and the best chance of the half belonged to the Bishops' Bailey Hawkins, whose shot hit the crossbar.
The Comets broke through in the 65th minute of the second half when
Mayci Sayre scored the game's first goal, assisted by
Payton Childers, to make it 1-0. Sayre struck again in the 76th minute, this time assisted by
Kendra Kovacs, to extend the lead to 2-0. The two goals by Sayre marked her first strikes of the season.
Silje Rehstrom capped the scoring in the 83rd minute, and
Juli Sprague and
Brooklyn Herbert each picked up an assist on the play. Rehstrom's goal was the first in her collegiate career.
Capital outshot Ohio Wesleyan 19-15 overall, with five shots on goal. Sayre led the way with three shots and two goals, while Herbert also added three shots. Defensively, goalkeeper
Lauren Hinshaw played all 90 minutes and made three saves to earn her second straight shutout.
