BEREA, Ohio – The Capital University women's soccer team shook off a somewhat slow start very quickly as they erupted for their largest win of the season on Saturday, beating Baldwin Wallace by a final score of 5-1. The result improves Capital to 8-2 overall and 1-0 in the OAC, while BW moves back to 5-5-1 and 0-1 in the conference.
Capital saw themselves trailing just 30 seconds into the match as a partially failed clearance landed at the foot of Kalyn Rich who sent a far shot to the upper corner.
The Comets did not let that deficit deter them as they quickly responded with a flourish. First, the Comets tied the game in the 5th minute as
Payton Childers struck a smooth one-time shot across goal and into the side-netting off a cross by
Ava Spirk. The goal was Childers' fourth of the season.
The junior was back at it as Childers netted her second of the game and fifth of the season just four minutes later as this time she scored one-v-one on the BW goalie after a slick combination from
Megan Foulke and
Sarah Kelly set her through on goal.
Now ahead 2-1, Capital poured it on and added two more to their lead before halftime. The next goal came in the 27th minute as
Kasey Duke headed home a free kick service from
Elise Buckerfield. Then, the fourth goal of the game for Capital came in the 44th minute as
Brooklyn Herbert smashed home a shot from deep after
Kendra Kovacs sent a pass across the field to her.
Ahead 4-1 at the break, Capital emerged from the halftime intermission not fully satisfied as they would add another goal in the 51st minute. This time, Childers turned provider as she sent a pass across the top of the box to Duke who slammed home the first-time goal – her second of the game.
From there, the Comets set into cruise control and saw out the final 39 minutes of action for the 5-1 final score. In total, Capital out-shot the Yellow Jackets 18-15 with an 11-8 margin in shots on target.
Lauren Hinshaw played the full 90 minutes in goal for Capital and made a career-high seven saves.
