COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's soccer team comfortably cruised past Hanover College on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Panthers by a final score of 4-1. In total, Capital out-shot the visitors 22-6, including a 10-3 edge in shots on goal.
Capital moves to 4-1 on the season with the win, while Hanover drops to 4-3 overall.
The game burst into action right after the kickoff as Capital scored just 2:12 in the game.
Payton Childers scored her first Capital goal from close range, slamming home a cross from
Ava Spirk after
Sarah Kelly set up Spirk on the wing.
Hanover responded shortly after taking advantage of a misplay at the back as Ally Byrd tapped in from close range, tying the game at 1-1 just 37 seconds after Cap went in front.
Despite the early tied score, Capital regained the lead just 3:10 later as
Kasey Duke slammed home a shot from outside the box off a deflected shot from
Juli Sprague.
That score would hold and the game would calm down as the time ticked on, with 2-1 serving as the halftime score.
The Comets weathered a bit of pressure from the Panthers early in the second half, but stayed composed and eventually added to their lead in the 76th minute as Sprague would get her first goal of the season on a beautifully curled shot from outside the area.
Capital got one more insurance goal right away after a host of substitutions came on. Hanover failed to clear a corner kick and it led to the fourth goal in the 84th minute of play.
Julie Huber settled the ball to the foot of
Maggie Springer who lashed her first touch toward goal and into the bottom left corner of the net. The goal was Springer's first career goal.
Lauren Hinshaw played all 90 minutes in goal, making two saves on the afternoon.
