Volleyball Sweeps Blackburn Before Falling to Illinois College

HANOVER, Ind. — Continuing play at the Hanover Invitational, the Capital volleyball team opened Saturday with a 3-0 sweep of Blackburn College.

Cici Harris led Capital's attack with 10 kills. Chloe Preocanin added eight kills, two aces, three blocks and four assists. Setter Carlee Thompson recorded a team-high 13 assists and added 10 digs.

Capital won the opening set 26-24 after overcoming an early deficit. The Comets used a 6-1 run to erase Blackburn's lead and tie the set at 12-12. Capital then went on another 6-1 run to take an 18-14 advantage before closing out the set.

Blackburn answered with a 6-0 run in the second set to take an early lead, but Capital stayed within distance. The Comets forced another extra-point situation and scored the final two points to take the set 27-25 and move ahead 2-0.

The teams traded runs throughout the third set, with Blackburn taking a 16-14 lead. Capital responded with a 6-0 run to take a 22-19 advantage before scoring the final three points to complete the sweep with a 25-22 victory. The win marked Capital's first sweep of the season.

Closing out the final game of the invitational, the Comets fell to Illinois College, 3-1, in their second game on Saturday.

The Comets battled in the opening set but ultimately fell to the Lady Blues, 25-23. Illinois College took control late in the set, building a six-point lead to secure the first-set victory.

Capital responded in the second set, earning a 25-22 win to even the match at 1-1. The set remained close throughout, but the Comets closed on a 3-0 run to claim the final three points and level the match.

The Lady Blues answered by taking the final two sets, 25-18 and 25-19, to secure the 3-1 victory. Illinois College improved to 6-4 on the season.
