Hanover, Ind. — The Capital University volleyball team returned to action Friday after Wednesday's cancellation, opening play at the Hanover Invitational against host Hanover College.
The Comets battled throughout their first match of the invitational but ultimately fell to the Pioneers, 3-1.
Capital kept pace with Hanover early in the first set before the Pioneers pulled away. Hanover led 18-8 before closing the set on a 6-0 run to take it, 25-9.
Capital responded in the second set, earning a 25-22 victory. The Comets recorded 11 kills and three service aces in the set. The teams were tied at 7-7 before the Comets created a four-point advantage and maintained their lead. Capital held a 20-15 lead late in the set before closing it out, 25-22, to even the match at 1-1.
Hanover regained momentum in the third set, recording 14 kills while hitting .400. Capital continued to battle and cut the deficit to seven points, but the Pioneers controlled the latter portion of the set and closed it out, 25-17.
The Pioneers carried that momentum into the fourth set, but Capital again kept pace early. Hanover eventually put together a strong offensive run, recording 15 kills — its highest total in any set — to secure the match with a 25-14 fourth-set victory.
Cici Harris led the Comets with nine kills, followed by
Ava Knight with eight kills and 10 digs.
Chloe Preocanin led the team with 14 digs while adding four kills. Setter
Carlee Thompson finished the match with 13 assists.

Capital will return to action tomorrow for two more matches at the Hanover Invitational. The Comets will face Blackburn at noon before taking on Illinois College at 2 p.m.
