COLUMBUS, Ohio - Coming off their first win against Wooster on Wednesday night, the Capital volleyball team set its sights on the Pam Briggs Classic, co-hosted by the Comets and Otterbein University in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday and Saturday.
Capital's slate included two games Friday against Trine University and Washington & Jefferson College. The Comets will conclude the tournament Saturday against Hanover College.
To start the tournament, the Comets took on Trine in the first game of the day, falling 3-1 after a tough fight. Capital responded with a 3-1 win over Washington & Jefferson to split the day.
Game One vs. Trine
Offensively, senior
Chloe Preocanin led the way with 12 kills and two aces.
Ava Knight followed with eight kills and led the Comets with eight digs. Setter
Carlee Thompson led Capital with 15 assists.
In the first set, both teams battled back and forth until Trine pulled away with the final points to take a 25-22 victory. The action remained tight in the second set, as the Comets battled the Thunder until the final points. Trine secured the final two points to take the set, 25-23.
In the third set, the Comets took control from the start and maintained their offensive momentum. Capital totaled 15 kills, its most in any set, to force a fourth set with a 25-23 victory.
Trine opened the fourth set with the lead and maintained control, completing the match with a 25-18 victory to earn its second win of the season.
Game Two vs. Washington & Jefferson
In their second game of the day, the Comets closed out Friday with a win, improving their record to 2-5. Washington & Jefferson fell to 2-6.
Offensively,
Cici Harris led the attack with 13 kills while also pacing the Comets with three blocks.
Abby Reed followed with 11 kills.
Chloe Preocanin once again led the way at the service line, recording four aces while adding 19 digs. Setter
Carlee Thompson was hot as well, assisting on 19 kills to her attackers.
Capital opened the match with a 29-27 victory in a back-and-forth first set that went to extra points. The Comets' offense recorded 14 kills in the opening set. Washington & Jefferson responded in the second set, taking an early lead and holding on for a 25-16 victory.
Capital quickly responded in the third set, again recording 14 kills and taking a 25-20 victory. The fourth set featured another back-and-forth battle, with the teams trading points throughout. With the score at 24-22, Capital fought back and once again needed extra points to secure the win, 26-24, taking the match in four sets.
