DELAWARE, Ohio – The Capital University softball team traveled to Ohio Wesleyan on Thursday afternoon where they picked up a shutout sweep of the Bishops, winning 11-0 and 3-0. The wins brought Capital's win streak up to five in a row and their shutout streak to three in a row.
The wins move Capital to 12-8 overall, while OWU sets back to 4-14 on the season.
GAME ONE: Capital def. OWU, 11-0 (5 innings)
The Comets went in front 3-0 in the top of the first inning as Capital opened the game with three straight singles, with the third being an RBI single by
Kyleigh Kirby. Then, two batters later,
Megan Parry hit an RBI single of her own. With Kirby now on third base, an attempted steal attempt in the field allowed Kirby to score, making it 3-0.
From that point on, it was all Comets as they would go on to put up 11 runs to seal a five-run win over the Bishops. Capital scored three in the third thanks to a two-RBI double by Parry and an RBI single by Emmal Sweetman. In the fourth, Capital scored two more thanks to an RBI double by
Shelby Allen and another RBI single by Kirby. In the fifth, the Comets polished it off with three more runs with an RBI single by
Reagan Irons and a two-RBI double this time by Allen.
All said and done, the Comets tagged 14 hits, led by three each from Irons and Kirby.
Autumn Bridges, Allen, and Parry each had two hits, while
Isabel Sayre and Sweetman each had one.
Megan Mlinaric pitched the full five innings of shutout ball, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out two.
GAME TWO: Capital def. OWU, 3-0
The Comets were on the front foot again in game two, but this time scattered only eight hits and scored three runs, but thanks to another gem of a pitching performance, the Comets shutout the Bishops again, winning 3-0 this time.
Capital's first run came in the first on an RBI single by
Megan Parry. Capital added a second run in the second inning as another attempted steal attempt yielded a run from third base as
Shelby Allen dashed home. The third and final run again was scored by Allen who this time scored on a sacrifice squeeze bunt by
Lyndi Hemmelgarn.
Of Cap's eight hits,
Reagan Irons collected three,
Shelby Allen had two and
Kyleigh Kirby, Parry, and
Morgan Priest each had one.
Addi Parker started in the pitcher's circle, tossing 2.1 innings of shutout play, conceding two hits and a walk.
Alyssa Miller (6-2) finished the final 4.2 innings and did not allow a hit while walking just one. She finished with six strikeouts.
