WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Capital University softball team fell behind early in both games of an eventual sweep at Wilmington and could not do enough to overcome the early deficits en route to 6-5 and 2-0 losses.
The results drop the Comets back to 12-10 overall and 2-4 in the conference. Wilmington moves to 9-13 overall and 3-5 in the OAC.
GAME ONE: Wilmington def. Capital, 6-5
The Comets went in front first, scoring a run in the top of the first inning thanks to an RBI single by
Isabel Sayre that plated
Autumn Bridges.
Despite going in front, the Comets fell behind in the bottom of the first, 2-1 and never surmounted a full comeback as Wilmington added just enough insurance throughout the remainder of the game.
Capital did stay in it as they eventually got runs back by a double steal that scored Bridges from third, a solo home run by
Shelby Allen – the first of her career – and a two-RBI single by
Audrey Thomas. Ultimately, the late run by the Comets came up just short at 6-5.
The Comets collected 10 hits in the game with Bridges recording three and
Kyleigh Kirby and Allen each having two. Sayre,
Emma Sweetman, and Thomas added one hit each.
Alyssa Miller was hit with the loss as she conceded three runs (two earned) in her start.
Megan Mlinaric tossed an inning and allowed three runs.
Addi Parker finished the final four innings allowing no runs on three hits. Each pitcher finished with two strikeouts.
GAME TWO: Wilmington def. Capital, 2-0
The Comets struggled to get their offense going in game two with the team collecting just two hits in the game, one each from
Autumn Bridges and
Kyleigh Kirby.
Unfortunately, the Quakers did enough to push across two runs to and escape with a 2-0 win in the second game.
In addition to the two hits, Capital drew four walks – one each from Bridges,
Isabel Sayre,
Emma Sweetman and
Morgan Priest.
Alyssa Miller (6-4) started and pitched the first 4.2 innings where she allowed one earned run on five hits and two walks. She struckout four.
Addi Parker tossed the final 1.1 innings and allowed two hits and a walk but no runs.
