Track and Field Shows Well at All-Ohio Championships

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Capital University track and field program went back to Ohio Wesleyan University on Friday and Saturday this weekend where they battled in the All-Ohio Championships.

There, the Comets set two new school records and saw many other marks added to the program top-10 lists. As a team, the Comet women placed seventh out of 14 teams. In team scoring, the men were fifth out of 14 teams. 

MEN
100-meter dash: Mershaud Parker qualified third in a time of 10.95 seconds. Cheik Souare was 13th in 11.19 seconds, Leighton Kordack was 17th in 11.30 seconds and Demetre Wheeler was 25th in 11.46 seconds. In the finals, Parker placed fourth in a time of 10.83 seconds – a time that moves him into sixth all-time at Capital. 

200-meter dash: Mershaud Parker placed fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.04 seconds. Neko Henry placed seventh in 22.30 seconds and Cheik Sourare was eighth in 22.41 seconds. Demetre Wheeler was 11th in 22.46 seconds while Leighton Kordack was 21st in 22.95 seconds. 

400-meter dash: Neko Henry placed third overall, earning All-Ohio honors in a time of 48.99 seconds. The time is good enough to set Henry sixth all-time at Capital. 

800-meter run: Kolin Brake placed 10th overall, running a time of 1:58.12. 

1,500-meter run: Kolin Brake earned All-Ohio accolades with a third place finish, clocking in at 3:58.73. With the time, he jumped into fourth all-time and became just the fourth in program history to eclipse the four-minute mark in the event. Chip Smith was close behind with a fifth place finish, clocking in at 4:02.40. The time for Smith was good to set him fifth all-time at Capital. Reef Murray placed 27th in a time of 4:18.71. 

3,000-meter steeplechase: Mikey Arnone earned All-Ohio honors by placing third in the steeplechase. He ran a time of 9:35.14 which is good to set a new school record in the event, just narrowly beating out the prior record of 9:35.18, set by Donovan Slattery. Aiden Mahony placed 11th in the event, running a time of 10:15.00, which improves his own standing in eighth all-time in the event. 

5,000-meter run: Justin Rona placed fifth overall in a time of 15:09.52 which is good for second best all-time at Capital. Ridwan Aliawl placed 20th in a time of 15:44.40. Dimetrius Floyd was 26th in 16:24.48. 

10,000-meter run: Zach Glotzbecker took second place to earn All-Ohio after he ran a time of 32:10.29. The time was good enough to move him up into second all-time at Capital. Aaron McNutt placed 19th in a time of 35:21.38. 

4x100-meter relay: The team of Mershaud Parker, Cheik Souare, Demetre Wheeler, and Leighton Kordack placed fourth in a time of 42.36 seconds. 

4x400-meter relay: The team of Mershaud Parker, Neko Henry, Demetre Wheeler and Kolin Brake ran a time of 3:19.23 en route to All-Ohio Champion status. The time was good enough to move the relay team into second all-time in Capital history. 

Shot Put: Nolan Piper placed sixth with a top throw of 14.20 meters. 

Discus: Piper placed third and earned All-Ohio honors with a best throw of 44.09 meters in the discus. The throw was good enough to move Piper into fifth all-time in the event at Capital. 

Javelin: Henry Taylor placed 13th with a throw of 35.37 meters. 

WOMEN
100-meter dash: Jaleea Harvey qualified for the finals in seventh place, clocking a prelim time of 12.76 seconds. Jersie Papacostas was 20th in 13.37 seconds. In the finals, Harvey placed seventh in a time of 12.97 seconds. 

100-meter hurdles: Maria Da Cunha qualified for the finals in a time of 15.37 seconds. There in the finals, she placed sixth with a time of 14.99 seconds. 

200-meter dash: Isabella Johnson placed 12th in a time of 26.47 seconds. Jaleea Harvey was 20th in 26.82 seconds. 

400-meter hurdles: Maria Da Cunha earned All-Ohio champion status, winning the 400 hurdles in a time of 1:04.52. 

800-meter run: Shelby Janes placed 14th in a time of 2:27.61. Chloe Zarlino was 29th in 2:46.86. 

1,500-meter run: Jenavieve Vasquez was 21st overall in a time of 5:18.84. 

10,000-meter run: Laney Tarr earned All-Ohio with a third place finish, clocking in at 38:53.57 in her first ever 10K. The time was also good enough to beat the prior school record of 39:10.16, set by Hannah Westhoven in 2018. 

4x400-meter relay: The quartet of Maria Da Cunha, Isabella Johnson, Juli Sprague and Shelby Janes earned All-Ohio Champion honors with a time of 4:03.93. The time was good enough to set the relay team sixth all-time in Capital history. 

Long Jump: Jersie Papacostas jumped her way into All-Ohio status with a second place finish on a jump of 5.03 meters. Brooklyn Herbert was seventh with a jump of 4.67 meters and Larae Portis was ninth, jumping 4.45 meters. 

Triple Jump: Ports placed sixth in the triple jump with a top mark of 10.30 meters. The distance registered Portis into eighth all-time at Capital. 

High Jump: Herbert was eighth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.48 meters. 

Pole Vault: Claire Robinson placed fourth in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 3.40 meters. Alex Wilkinson was sixth, also clearing the bar at 3.40 meters, on one extra attempt. 

Discus: Mia Sanchez placed 19th with a throw of 33.46 meters, while Lillian Baker was 24th with a toss of 30.11 meters.

Capital will next be on the track on Friday, April 17th as they take part in the Otterbein Twilight.
