Capital Baseball Sweeps Heidelberg Behind Late Rally, Dominant Nightcap

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team secured an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of Heidelberg University on Saturday afternoon at Peaceful Valley, edging the Student Princes 5-4 in a dramatic opener before cruising to a 12-1 victory in the nightcap. For the Comets, this marks the first season since 2018 that they have swept two Ohio Athletic Conference opponents.  It is also the first time in over 15 years that Capital has taken both games from Heidelberg.

With the pair of wins, the Comets improved to 15-11 on the season and 4-4 in OAC play, while Heidelberg fell to 13-13 overall and 4-4 in conference. Just 26 games in, Capital has already matched their win total from last season

GAME ONE (5-4 W)
Capital used a four-run eighth inning to erase a three-run deficit and steal the opener in walk-off fashion, winning 5-4 behind timely hitting and clutch bullpen work.

Heidelberg struck first with an unearned run in the second before pushing across three runs in the seventh to take a 4-1 advantage. Capital had plated its lone run up to that point in the top of the seventh on an RBI from Charlie Colson, who reached on an error to bring home Michael Andryszczyk.

The momentum fully shifted in the eighth. Ty Clifton and Gio Mastrorosa opened the frame with a single and a walk before a Heidelberg error loaded the bases. Pinch hitter Trent Clark delivered the tying blow with an RBI single up the middle, and Andryszczyk followed with a sacrifice fly to knot the game. A wild pitch allowed the go-ahead run to score before Kielan LaMarr capped the rally with an RBI single to make it 5-4.

Nash Andrix earned the win after tossing seven strong innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits. Tyler Bebout slammed the door with two scoreless innings in relief, striking out two to secure his first save of the season.

Offensively, LaMarr finished 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Clifton and Crociata each recorded multiple hits.

GAME TWO (12-1 W)
Capital carried the momentum into game two, unleashing a 16-hit offensive attack while the pitching staff dominated in a convincing 12-1 victory.

The Comets wasted no time, grabbing a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Bryce Kyees RBI double. Capital broke the game open with a three-run third and followed with a four-run fifth to take firm control.

Ty Clifton delivered a monster performance, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, including a two-run single in the fifth. Bryce Kyees added two hits and two RBIs, while M. Andryszczyk finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs.

On the mound, Dawson Lewis improved to 2-0 after spinning five shutout innings, allowing just three hits while striking out three. Casey Wilkins added three innings of scoreless relief, and Drew Pfundt closed out the game.

Capital scored in six different innings and held Heidelberg to just five hits in the final game.

UP NEXT
The Comets take a small pause from OAC play on Wednesday, Apr. 15, as they travel to Wooster for a single game slated to begin at 4:00 PM.
