COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's lacrosse team comfortably defeated Allegheny, 13-1 on Sunday afternoon to pick up their first win of the season.
The Comets are now 1-4, while Allegheny is 2-3.
The early minutes of the game went by without a score as neither team found a breakthrough until 4:55 left in the first period of play. The eventual icebreaker came from
Mason Miller's first goal of the season off a feed from
Elliott Rhoton. With the ice now broken, Capital eventually put two more goals away before the end of the period, thanks to goals by
Braylon Dawson and
Jess Lipp. Lipp also assisted Dawson's goal.
In the second quarter, Capital pressed down on the gas and extended their lead out to 8-0 by halftime with goals coming from Lipp (2),
Aiden Evans,
Charlie Howenstine and Dawson. Lipp assisted twice and Howenstine picked up an assist as well.
With the first half shutout for the Gators, they needed just three minutes to score what would be their only goal of the game as JP Rakis scored from close range.
After the Allegheny goal, Capital scored once in the third to make it 9-1 thanks to a
Evan Legner goal from
Charlie Howenstine.
In the fourth quarter, Capital added some insurance with goals by Lipp,
Colton Woods,
Braeden Flint and
Freddy Noday. Lipp and
Mason Miller got assists in the period as well. With the four goals, Capital hung on for the eventual 13-1 win.
THE NUMBERS
Jess Lipp had a career day, picking up eight points on four goals and four assists. Lipp also had two ground balls and one caused turnover.
Charlie Howenstine added a goal and two assists as well. He added four ground balls.
Braylon Dawson scored twice to go with a pair of ground balls.
Braeden Flint,
Freddy Noday,
Aiden Evans,
Colton Woods,
Mason Miller and
Evan Legner also scored once each.
Ian Zaletel and Noday tied for a team-high five ground balls, followed by three Comets with four pick-ups – Howenstine,
Wyatt Stemler and Legner.
Three Comets led the team with two caused turnovers each –
Mason Ridgway,
Jackson Hart and
Leelan Durham.
Noday and
Tyler Lieu combined to dominate the faceoff, with Noday going 8-for-10 and Lieu going 5-of-8.
Wyatt Stemler made 10 saves in goal, with
Luc Kadlic making one in relief.

Capital will remain home for their next game as they host Wabash on Wednesday, March 11th at 7 p.m. The game is slated to follow the Capital women who play at 4 p.m. that day as well.
