CLERMONT, Fla. – The Capital University softball team wrapped up play at the Spring Games in Clermont, Florida today with a pair of losses to Johnson & Wales (R.I) and Alma. The Comets fell 6-1 to JWU and 4-3 to Alma.
Capital is now 5-3, while JWU improved to 2-5 and Alma moved to 7-1.
GAME ONE: JWU def. Capital, 6-1
The Comets went on top in the bottom of the first inning hanks to an RBI double by
Megan Parry that scored
Kyleigh Kirby. Capital carried the 1-0 lead for just a short time as the Wildcats struck back for four runs in the top of the second inning.
From there, the Comet bats struggled to get going, tallying just three total hits in the game. With those three hits and an additional six walks, Capital just couldn't push another run across the plate as JWU tacked on two more to win 6-1.
Parry, Kirby, and
Susan Gray were the Comets with a hit in the game, while Kirby and
Emma Sweetman each had two walks.
Megan Mlinaric started the game for Capital, pitching 1.1 innings and surrendering four runs. She struckout two.
Alyssa Miller came in to close out the game, conceding two runs in 5.2 innings of work. She struckout five.
GAME TWO: Alma def. Capital, 4-3
The game proved to be a ol' fashioned pitcher's battle across the early part of the game as both pitchers refused to give up a string of opposing offense.
However, Alma broke through in the bottom of the second, scoring on error. They added another run in the third and two more in the fifth as they eventually strung together five hits and three walks in the game.
Capital started a rally in the top of the sixth inning, yielding three runs of their own, but eventually they would come up short, 4-3. The three runs for Cap were scored via an error, a sacrifice fly by
Kyleigh Kirby and an RBI sacrifice squeeze bunt by
Morgan Priest.
In the game, Capital had five hits and one walk.
Lyndi Hemmelgarn recorded two hits, joined in the hit column by
Reagan Irons,
Ryanne Wilson and
Audrey Thomas. Irons added a walk as well.
Addi Parker had a strong showing on the mound across four innings, but ultimately was saddled with the four runs to take the loss. She struckout three.
Alyssa Miller finished the final two innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out one.

Capital will return to Columbus and currently are scheduled to play at home on Wednesday, March 11th at 3 and 5 p.m. Weather is questionable for that day, so fans are encouraged to monitor the softball schedule on athletics.capital.edu for potential changes.
