Softball Drops Two Against Adrian in Home Opener

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Capital University softball team was back in action on Tuesday, Mar. 10 for their home opener against Adrian College.  Coming off their spring break trip where they started the season 5-3, the Comets would drop both games.  With the losses, Capital falls to 5-5 on the season.  Meanwhile, Adrian now stands at 6-6 to begin their season.

GAME ONE (9-1 L)
In the first game of the day, Capital would be kept off balance by Adrian's Avery Clark, limiting the Comets to just four hits and one run in the contest.  The Bulldogs would get on the board first, taking advantage of two Capital errors in the top of the third to take an early 2-0 lead.  They would keep things rolling in the fourth, adding three more runs to extend their advantage to five.

The Comets would finally crack the hit column in the bottom half of the fourth, as Reagan Irons led things off with a single to left center.  Autumn Bridges would follow up with a single of her own, giving Capital their first real scoring threat of the contest. For Bridges, that base knock marked the 100th of her career.  After two straight retired by Adrian, Emma Sweetman would come up big, lacing a ball into the right center gap for an RBI double.

Unfortunately for the Comets, the Bulldogs would score three runs in the top of the sixth and one more in the seventh to put the game out of reach and bring the score to its eventual final of 9-1.

Taking the loss in the circle was Megan Mlinaric, who would pitch six innings and allow four earned runs on six hits.  She would finish the game with three strikeouts.  In relief of Mlinaric was Addi Parker, who allowed three earned runs on seven Adrian hits.

GAME TWO (6-2 L)
In the second game of the day, the Comets turned pitching duties over to reigning Ohio Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week Alyssa Miller.  The sophomore would be dominant early, starting the game with three scoreless frames.

It would be Capital who would get on the board first, as an RBI single from Audrey Thomas gave them a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the second.

The Bulldogs would finally break through in the fourth, scoring two runs with two outs in the frame to take the 2-1 advantage.  In the bottom half the Comets would respond right back, tying the game up with an RBI double from Emma Sweetman.

With the game still knotted at two in the bottom of the fifth, the Comets found themselves in a great scoring opportunity with runners on second and third and just one out.  Looking to bring in a run with a bunt, Bridges laid one down but made contact with the ball outside of the batters box, resulting in the second out and the runners staying put.  Looking for some two out magic, Ryanne Wilson would send a screamer down the third base line, but a great play by the Adrian third baseman allowed the Bulldogs to escape with no damage done.

Using the momentum, Adrian would go on to score four runs in the sixth, ultimately putting the game out of reach for Capital.

Miller would go all seven innings in the circle, matching her career-high strikeout total of eight.  She would allow just four earned runs on seven hits.

Leading the Comets offensively were Reagan Irons, Emma Sweetman, and Shelby Allen, as they would all finish with two hits on the day.
