VERO BEACH, Fla. - The Capital University baseball team kicked off the second half of their spring trip to Vero Beach on Thursday, Mar. 5, taking on Susquehanna University in a single nine inning contest. A seven run third inning would propel the River Hawks to an 11-4 win over the Comets. With the loss, Capital has now dropped three games in a row and stands at 7-3 on the season. For Susquehanna, their record now sits at 5-3.
The River Hawks would strike first, scoring one run in the bottom half of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Comets would respond right back, scoring one run of their own in the second off a
Michael Andryszczyk RBI single, knotting the game up 1-1.
The big blow would come in the bottom of the third, as Susquehanna would use two triples and a home run to put up a seven spot and give themselves an 8-1 advantage.
Capital would attempt to battle back by scoring two runs in the fifth, a product of a
Grayson Gulley solo shot and a
Kielan LaMarr RBI single. However, they would not crack the scoreboard again until the final frame.
Throwing 4.1 strong innings in relief was
Diego Astacio, as the senior would allow just three hits and one run in his appearance on the mound. He would finish with a career-high five strikeouts to finish his line.
Earning the start at designated hitter was sophomore
Trent Clark, who finished with two hits, including an RBI double in the top of the ninth.
Also finishing with two hits each were Gulley and Andryszczyk, both also finishing with one RBI to complete their stat line.
