COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's lacrosse team scored four goals in just over a minute in the third quarter to surge ahead to an eventual 13-6 win over Marietta on Wednesday night. The win leveled their OAC record at 1-1 this season, while making them 3-5 overall. Marietta drops to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in OAC play with the loss.
In the first quarter, Capital opened up the game with a pair of goals, initially kickstarting things with a man-up goal by
Jess Lipp from an assist by
Charlie Howenstine. Just over a minute later,
Aiden Evans dispatched a goal off a feed from
Mason Miller, making it 2-0 early.
By the end of the first, Marietta settled in and tied the score at 2-2 before taking a brief lead at 3-2 to start the second quarter. Two goals by the Comets from Lipp and
Braylon Dawson made it a 4-3 Cap lead by halftime.
Out of the halftime break, the Comets came out on fire, scoring five straight goals, including a string of four goals in a 61-second span. The goals in the run came via Lipp (2), Evans,
Tyler Lieu and Miller.
The Pioneers finally responded back with a goal, but yet another strike from Lipp made it 10-4. Marietta scored once more before the end of the quarter to bring it within five.
In the fourth quarter, Capital scored goals via
Mason Miller,
Elliott Rhoton and
Anthony Carusone to polish off the 13-6 victory.
THE NUMBERS
Jess Lipp led the team with seven points on five goals and two assists all to go with two ground balls and one caused turnover.
Mason Miller had a career-high six points on two goals and four assists.
Elliott Rhoton went for three points on a goal and two assists.
Aiden Evans scored twice to go with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Braylon Dawson,
Tyler Lieu and
Anthony Carusone each scored once.
Aaron Waltman and
Charlie Howenstine each recorded one assist.
Tyler Lieu and
Freddy Noday dominated the faceoff position as the duo won 18 faceoffs. Lieu was 9-of-11 with seven ground balls, while Noday was 9-for-12 with five GBs.
Gino Nave had four ground balls, while
Wyatt Stemler recorded three.
Jackson Hart,
Leelan Durham, and
Devin Flynn each had two caused turnovers.
Stemler made seven saves in goal, while
Luc Kadlic made one in his five plus minutes of work in goal.
