ALLIANCE, Ohio - The Capital University softball team kicked off the conference play portion of their season on Sunday, Mar. 22, taking on the University of Mount Union for a pair of games. The Comets would ultimately drop both games, moving their record to 7-7 overall and 0-2 in Ohio Athletic Conference play. Meanwhile, Mount Union moves to 10-4 and begins 2-0 in OAC play.
GAME ONE (8-0 L)
The Capital offense was unable to get going in the first game of the day, as the Mount Union pitching staff would hold the Comets hitless in the five innings of play.
Mount Union would crack the scoreboard in every inning, using a four-run third inning to put the game out of Capital's reach.
Kyleigh Kirby and
Emma Sweetman would both reach base by way of a walk in the contest.
Emmalee Putnam would make her second appearance of the season in the circle, throwing the final 0.2 innings in relief, recording two quick outs in just eight pitches.
GAME TWO (10-2 L)
Looking to erase from memory the first game, Capital would strike first in game two. The Comets would get their first base knock of the day on an
Autumn Bridges single in the top of the first, immediately followed by a two-run blast off the bat of Kirby to give them an early 2-0 lead.
The Purple Raiders responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the first, tying the game back up at two. Mount Union would hold strong defensively for the remainder of the game, as Capital would not be able to scratch anymore runs across the board.
The final blow would come in the bottom of the sixth, as Mount Union would score six runs to end the game with a score of 10-2.
Joining Bridges and Kirby in the hit column were
Ryanne Wilson and Lydni Hemmelgarn, who both had singles.
