Baseball Battles Tough With No. 17 Mount Union

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team played for the first time in Columbus, Ohio this season, hosting No. 17 ranked Mount Union at Huntington Park on Saturday. Despite a strong effort by the Comets, the high-powered Purple Raiders found a way to sweep the day via 12-8 and 9-7 scores.

With the results, Capital is now 11-7 overall and 0-2 in the OAC, while Mount is 15-3 and 2-0 in the conference.

GAME ONE: Mount def. Capital, 12-8
The Comets got ahead early as Bryce Kyees hit an RBI single up the middle to score Charlie Colson from second before Ty Clifton hit an RBI infield single to score Kielan LaMarr. The two runs put Capital ahead 2-0 in the first. That score would hold until the fourth inning.

In that fourth, Mount's Derek Curry hit a three-run home run to make it 3-2 for Mount, but the lead wouldn't hold long for Mount Union.

Capital responded in force in the bottom of the fifth inning as Colson hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot that put the Comets back in front 4-3. Before the inning would end, Capital scored two more on an RBI single by Gio Mastrorosa and a sac fly by Robby Harrison

Unfortunately for the Comets, Mount Union scored the next nine runs scattered across the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings to go up 12-6.

In the bottom of the ninth, Capital didn't go quietly as Bryce Kyees would launch his fourth homer of the season to right field, bringing the score to 12-8. That home run would be a notable one in the history of Capital baseball as it brought the Comets' season total through 17 games to 27, setting a new program record for most home runs in a single season by the team. The prior record of 26 homers had previously stood since the 1985 season.

Kyees, LaMarr, Clifton, Harrison, and Michael Andrysczyck each led the way with two hits a piece offensively.

On the mound, Nash Andrix threw four innings, conceding three runs on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Casey Wilkins (2-1) got hit with the loss as he allowed five runs on six hits and a walk in 2.2 of relief. He finished with five strikeouts. Noah Bromberg and Aidan Prenc threw the other 2.1 of relief efforts.

GAME TWO: Mount def. Capital, 9-7
This time, the early scoring would all go the way of the Purple Raiders as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead by the top of the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Capital finally pushed across their first run of the game on a RBI groundout by Ty Clifton

In the sixth, the Comets would add another thanks to an RBI single by Robby Harrison

After Mount tacked on a seventh run, Capital scored their third of the game in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI groundout by Colin Tomanski

Mount would get what proved to be two vital insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning to make the score 9-3.

In the bottom of the ninth, Capital rallied hard, but ultimately came up too little, too late. In that inning, the Comets plated four runs thanks to a two-run single by Charlie Colson and back-to-back sac flies by Bryce Kyees and Gio Mastrorosa. Unfortunately, the momentum was halted by the Purple Raiders as the game ended 9-7 in their favor.

Kyees again led the team with two hits in game two.

Trevor Woodyard (1-3) picked up the loss as he conceded five earned runs on six hits and four walks in the first four innings of the game. Tyler Bebout allowed just one unearned run in three innings of relief, while Drew Pfundt conceded two runs in two innings. Pfundt also struckout four, while Woodyard and Bebout each had one strikeout.

UP NEXT
Capital will head back out on the road as they will travel to Kenyon for a midweek non-conference game on Wednesday, March 25th at 4 p.m.
