BREVARD, N.C. - The Capital University baseball team was back in action on Friday, Feb. 20 for the first two games of a three game set with Brevard College. The Comets remained scorching hot offensively, sweeping the day with 15-5 and 12-4 wins. With today's results, the Comets have now scored ten or more runs in four of their first five games. Their five game winning streak to begin the season is the longest since the shortened 2020 season.
GAME ONE
Getting the scoring started on the weekend would be the Comets, as a double from
Gio Mastrorosa in the top of the second would score
Ty Clifton to give them an early 1-0 lead. The scoring would continue into the third, with
Bryce Kyees ripping an RBI double down the left field line and
Ty Clifton adding an RBI single down the right field line to make it 3-0.
After the Comets extended their lead to four with another run in the fourth inning, Brevard would finally get on the board, cutting the lead in half with a two-run shot over the left field wall.
Capital would leave two on base in the fifth, allowing the Tornadoes to add two more in the bottom half and knot the game up at 4-4.
Nash Andrix would end his day going five complete innings, allowing four runs on four hits from Brevard. The sophomore would finish with a career high six strikeouts in his second start of the young season.
Despite squandering the four run cushion, the Comets would respond in a big way, putting up seven runs in the top of the sixth to take a 11-4 advantage. Four runs in the inning would come by way of the bunt, with Capital forcing the Tornadoes to make plays on defense.
Kielan LaMarr placed one perfectly down the third base line and drew an errand throw, before
Justin Weaver's bunt was mishandled by the Brevard catcher, allowing two more runs to score. The inning would be capped off by Mastroros, who roped a ball over the fence in left center for a two-run homer.
Capital would put the game on ice with two runs in both the eighth and ninth innings, extending their lead to 15-4.
Robby Harrison would leave the yard in the ninth, followed by Mastrorosa, who hit a solo shot for his second long ball of the game. For Mastrorosa, this is the first multi-homer game of his career.
Earning the rare four inning save was
Noah Bromberg, who allowed just one earned run and struck out a career high six batters on the way to earning his first career save.
Leading the Comets offensively would be Mastrorosa, Clifton,
Michael Andryszczyk, and
Charlie Colson, who each finished with three hits. Mastrorosa would use two home runs to lead the team with four RBIs.
GAME TWO
The second game of the day would see Brevard jump in front early, using a home run in the bottom of the first to take the 1-0 lead. However, their lead would be short-lived, as
Ty Clifton led off the top of the second with a solo shot of his own to tie the game.
Capital would take a one run lead in the fourth on a wild pitch, but the Tornadoes would come right back and score two of their own with a two-out two-RBI single to gain the 3-2 advantage.
The Comets' bats have been on fire to begin the season, and the remainder of the game was no different, scoring ten runs in the final five frames to put the game out of reach and give them their fifth straight win to begin the season.
Clifton led the offense in game two, recording a career high five hits, including his second home run of the season.
Kyees and Harrison would both add three hits, finishing with two and three RBIs respectively.
Earning his second win of the season was
Casey Wilkins, who pitched five strong innings in relief. The senior would allow just one run on two hits, striking out six Brevard batters.
