VERO BEACH, Fla. - The Capital University baseball team opened their spring trip on Monday, Mar. 2, taking on Kenyon College in a pair of seven inning games. After an exciting come from behind victory in game one and some shutdown pitching in game two, the Comets took two games to extend their win streak to seven games. The seven game streak is the longest in recent program history. With the wins, Capital now stands at 7-0. Meanwhile, Kenyon takes their first two losses of the season and moves to 5-2.
GAME ONE
The first three innings of play saw both teams feeling each other out, with the score knotted up at 1-1. In the top of the fourth Kenyon exploded for seven runs, using three straight walks by Capital with the bases loaded to make the score 8-1.
Despite the seven run deficit, the Comets would not back down, as
Ty Clifton ripped a two-run home run over the wall in right in the bottom half of the fourth to make it 8-3. This momentum, however, would be put on pause when the Owls added three of their own in the top of the fifth.
Just as they have all season long, the Capital offense refused to give in, scoring six runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 11-9 ballgame.
Bryce Kyees,
Robby Harrison, and
Michael Andryszczyk all had RBI knocks in the inning, along with Clifton, who sent his second home run of the day over the right field wall for another two-run shot.
After a scoreless top half of the sixth, the Comets would score four in the bottom half to take a 13-11 advantage. After a failed pick off attempt put them within one, Kyees recorded an RBI double that scored
Kielan LaMarr that tied the game at 11. A triple from Harrison and a sacrifice fly would bring the game to its eventual final.
In his first collegiate appearance,
Dawson Lewis shined, earning his first career win. The freshman pitched three scoreless frames, allowing no hits and striking out two Kenyon batters.
Leading the offense with a team high five RBIs was Clifton, who recorded his third and fourth home runs of the season.
Bryce Kyees finished with a team high three hits, including one double and tallying two RBIs.
GAME TWO
Looking to improve from their game one performance, the Capital pitching staff showed up in a big way in the second game. Will Fury got the start on the mound, allowing just one unearned run in four innings of work on the way to earning his first win of the season. The sophomore finished his day with four strikeouts.
Tyler Bebout,
Drew Pfundt, and
Noah Bromberg would each throw an inning in relief, combining for three shutout innings and allowing just two hits.
Kenyon would score their lone run in the bottom of the third on a fielding error to take a 1-0 lead. The Comets would strike in the top of the fifth, using two Kenyon defensive miscues and a pair of RBI walks to take a 4-1 lead.
Putting the game out of reach was
Hutch Crociata, as the freshman went yard for his second homer of the year and gave the Comets a 7-1 lead.
Kielan LaMarr would finish with a team high two hits, also drawing two walks and recording one RBI.
